I started a newsletter called Doing Science Justice in 2022. It explores racial and gender inequities in the scientific workforce. Why are there so few women and Black scientists in top academic and industry positions? Why are Black biomedical researchers less successful at getting big federal grants? Why do women get smaller sized grants? And most of all, how can we make progress toward fixing the inequities? It seems like there have been more and more attempts, at least to acknowledge the problem, from the bottom-up (#BlackinSTEM etc) and top-down (Eric Lander, director of the US Office of Science and Technology Policy, said he wanted everyone to have “a place at the lab bench”…then Lander resigned because of allegations of bullying). So, what is changing and what needs to happen to see more change?

If you think all this sounds important, please follow! I’m always reading and thinking about these issues, but fair warning, not so successfully finding the time to write posts. More subscribers—maybe you!—can’t hurt my motivation.
